Prepare for Action

Advancing your PFAC requires understanding current strengths, identifying strengths and areas for improvement, and developing specific goals for change.

Every organization should begin by gathering a team that will help guide the organization’s PFAC journey and support the following activities:

  • Work with leadership to gain support for efforts to improve PFAC representativeness, belonging, and engagement in health equity.
  • Review the organization’s current policies, practices, and data related to your PFAC.
  • Develop and implement an action plan that identifies priorities for change along with specific goals and actions.

In addition to the PFAC liaison or coordinator, it may be helpful for the PFAC team to include individuals working in health equity; community outreach (e.g., community engagement, community-based services); social work; Indigenous health; communications; volunteer coordination; care experience or service excellence; and hospital leadership. The team should also include PFAs and/or representatives from community-based groups, particularly those that work with populations underrepresented on the PFAC.
