The project team facilitated virtual Small Group Conversations with residents and families from four long-term care communities to learn about their experiences during the COVID-19 pandemic. Using the summary of key themes generated from these conversations, a root cause analysis was conducted to determine the root causes of social isolation and loneliness.

Root Cause AnalysisThe Fishbone Diagram or Cause and Effect Diagram helped to organize all of the contributing factors or causes of social isolation and loneliness to assist in identifying the root causes. The Diagram and root causes were printed in a large poster format and shared with residents, families, and long-term care staff and leaders in preparation for Stakeholder Meetings where research topics and themes were discussed and prioritized. To further explain this process, the Tree Diagram was shared with them as well.
