Patient Stories Enhance Partnerships and Decision-Making
Three articles published in April 2016 (in Health Affairs and the NY Times’ Well blog) reflect on the importance of “narrative” in forging patient-clinician partnerships and strengthening shared decision-making.

Shared Decision Making: The Need for Patient-Clinician Conversation, Not Just Information highlights the importance of clinicians “drawing out and caring about” the circumstances and values of each individual patient.

The Importance of Integrating Narrative into Health Care Decision Making urges the field to develop new qualitative research tools so that patient stories can be used effectively.

Letting Patients Tell Their Stories underscores how important patient stories can be to diagnosis and development of treatment recommendations.

priv presence An excellent resource about patient and family stories is the book, Privileged Presence: Personal Stories of Connections in Health Care, co-authored by Liz Crocker, IPFCC Board member, and Bev Johnson, IPFCC President and CEO. Liz Crocker will be moderating a panel at IPFCC’s International Conference, Why Stories Matter: Writers Reflect on Experiences, Motivations, and Hope, with authors, Tilda Shalof and Will Schwalbe. Copies of Privileged Presence can be purchased at the Conference or online. All three authors will be signing copies of their books at the Conference during the Welcome Reception on Monday, July 25th from 5:30 – 7:00 pm.

Insights in Detail: Identifying the Barriers to Improving Care and Overcoming Them

In early 2016, an online survey about care redesign was sent to the NEJM Catalyst Insights Council, which includes U.S. health care executives, clinician leaders, and clinicians at organizations directly involved in health care delivery. A total of 297 completed surveys were included in the analysis.

In a May 26, 2016 article published in Catalyst, Anna M. Roth, CEO of Contra Costa Regional Medical Center and Health Centers in Martinez, CA, and IPFCC Faculty Member, commented about the survey and report. Roth urged the field to really understand what is meant by value of care, “I think most people in health care are thinking about finances, but patients are thinking about their quality of life and the ability to engage in things that matter to them . . .” Read the article and download the full Care Redesign Report.

Contra Costa Regional Medical Center (CCRMC) is one of the exemplar hospitals in IPFCC’s Better Together: Partnering with Families campaign. Anna Roth and several other staff and clinicians from CCRMC are featured in the videos included in the Better Together Toolkit.

Primary Care Corner ~ Providence Medical Group’s Medical Director of Patient Engagement Reflects on the Importance of Patient/Family Advisors

Providence Medical Group (PMG) has 45 primary care clinics and over 400 medical providers serving patients in Oregon and southwest Washington state. Additionally, PMG services include 63 specialty clinics, 5 immediate care clinics, 12 express care and 2 Health eXpress (telehealth) clinics, 5 hospitalist programs, and 7 hospitals.

In building patient-centered medical homes in its primary care practices, PMG has strongly leveraged the “power of partnerships” with patient advisors. Patients and families have been members of PMG’s Executive Patient and Family Advisory Council since its inception in 2011.

After its success with patient partners on the Executive PFAC, PMG expanded PFACs into individual primary care clinics where patient and family advisors (PFAs) partner directly with leadership teams to improve the patient experience. Between 2013 and 2014, over 88 PFAs have served as members of Councils at 15 PMG clinics.

Headshot - Douglass NiehusDoug Niehus, MD, Medical Director of Patient Engagement for PMG, has been involved with PMG’s Executive PFAC since its inception. Doug is passionate about the importance of involving patients in decision-making and says, “Patient and family advisors are an invaluable part of our organization. They provide input and help shape care in our ambulatory clinics. We are now training Executive PFAC members to take positions on our executive level operations and strategic planning committees.”
