PXJ Case Study of Meaningful Engagement of Patients and Families

Deborah Dokken, IPFCC’s Senior Specialist for Patient and Family Partnerships, and Mary Minniti, former IPFCC staff member, are co-authors of a recent article in the Patient Experience Journal titled, “Meaningful Engagement of Patients and Families in a Complex Trial of Advance Care Planning in Primary Care.”

Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute® funded Oregon Health & Science University's 5-year multi-site study of advance care planning in primary care. IPFCC provided consultation about engagement of patient and family advisors (PFAs) to the project team. The article describes approaches used during the study to foster and sustain meaningful engagement of PFAs. Key lessons shared in the article include creating a range of opportunities that match PFA skills, preferences, and expectations; the importance of regular feedback; and the need to train staff about engagement. Access the article here.
